When we launched the Liquor Cabinet app, we curated what we felt were the most essential classic cocktails—those recipes that formed the foundation of contemporary cocktail culture. Our goal was to provide a solid baseline understanding of how bartenders construct their recipes: knowing how to make a proper classic, like a Margarita, Martini, or Manhattan, is the basis for making an infinite number of riffs. After all, bartenders throughout history have experimented with proportions, spirit combinations, and unexpected flavors to create some iconic riffs, like the Hemingway Daiquiri (a modified traditional Daiquiri). Add a liqueur, swap one ingredient for another, or leave something out altogether, and suddenly you’ve created a new cocktail, based on something tried and true. That’s how bartenders arrive at their cleverly named concoctions, and that’s why we’re excited to announce the launch of a brand new feature in the app we’re calling Variations.

Now, when you open your Liquor Cabinet app, you’ll see dots above each cocktail recipe card that features a Variation. Swipe through to the next card for the modified recipe along with a little bit about the inspiration for the drink and the bartender who invented it. We’ll be adding more and more Variations throughout the coming months, but encourage you to show us yours, too, with the tag #LiquorCabinetStories.
